Gerard Arthur Way (born The lead vocalist and co-founder of the American rock band My Chemical Romance, Mikey Way (born April 9, 1977), is the elder brother of the bassist in the group. He is 45 Years Old.

Early Life

Donna Lee (nee Rush) and Donald Way welcomed Gerard into the world on April 9, 1977 in Summit, New Jersey. He is half Scottish on his father’s side and a quarter Italian on his mother’s side. He was raised in Belleville, New Jersey, and his first public performance as Peter Pan in a school musical occurred in the fourth grade. From an early age, he was taught to sing, paint, and perform by his maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, a well-known creative force. She has been mentioned by him in interviews, where he has claimed that “she has taught me everything I know.” Helena, a song, is also about her. Throughout elementary school, the glam metal group Bon Jovi helped to shape his love of music.

When he discovered that everyone dies, he claims that he was initially terrified of dying and later developed an obsession with it.

Way was detained at gunpoint when he was 15 years old. He stated in an interview with Rolling Stone in I was shot in the head with a.357 Magnum in April 2008, and I was then executed-style by being thrown to the ground.” His worldview was unaffected by the incident, though. He continued, “I always have faith, no matter how ugly the world gets or how stupid it shows me it is.”^[1]

At the age of 16, Gerard Way attended an episode of the talk show hosted by Sally Jesse Raphael. He speaks at one point in the program, but you cannot find that clip on YouTube.

Way graduated from Belleville High School in 1995. He chose to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York City because he wanted to work in the comic book industry, and in 1999 he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree there.

Career

Music

Iron Maiden and The Misfits, as well as British musicians like Pulp, Blur, Queen, Morrissey, and The Smiths, had an influence on Gerard and his brother Mikey Way when they were teenagers. Mikey Way went on to become the bassist of My Chemical Romance. In the beginning, Way aspired to become a guitarist. When he was eight years old, his grandmother gave him his first guitar. He played in short-lived bands like Ray Gun Jones and Nancy Drew with future bandmate Ray Toro, but when he was unsuccessful (one band kicked him out because of his lack of guitar proficiency), he decided to focus on his art career.

During the September 11, 2001 attacks, Way was an intern for Cartoon Network in New York City. Way’s outlook on life changed in the weeks that followed after witnessing the attacks’ effects firsthand. He told Spin magazine, “I actually said, “Fuck art,” to myself. I must leave the basement right away. I have to travel the world. I must influence things.'”^[2] To help deal with the emotional effects the attacks had on him, Way wrote the lyrics to the song “Skylines and Turnstiles”, which has since been identified as the first song by My Chemical Romance.^[3] My Chemical Romance soon started coming together to form a band.

Way has provided vocals for bands including Every Time I Die’s “Kill The Music,” Head Automatica’s “Graduation Day,” Say Anything’s “In Defense Of The Genre,” and The Oval Portrait’s “From My Cold Dead Hands” and “Barnabus Collins Has More Skeletons In His Closet Than Vincent Price.”

Way has long battled depression, alcoholism, and prescription drug abuse, and music has proven to be a powerful tool in dealing with these issues. Way has written songs that are extremely personal to him, like “Helena,” which he wrote in honor of his late grandmother, as a way to work through personal conflicts.

Way and the musical project Julien-K remixed a The Cure song called Sleep When I’m Dead in 2008 for their EP called “Hypnagogic States.” The International Red Cross is supported entirely by the sales of the EP.

In early 2009, Way and Japanese singer Kyosuke Himuro co-produced the new theme song for Advent Children Complete, the Blu-Ray director’s cut of the movie sequel to the popular video game franchise, Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Along with singing with Himuro, he is credited with writing the song’s lyrics. The track, “Safe and Sound,” was made available on iTunes on April 29, 2009.^[4] “Safe and Sound” is only heard on the Japanese release of the film; the English release uses Himuro’s “Calling” (the original ending theme for Advent Children) in place of it.

Six years after the band’s official breakup on March 22, 2013, the band made the announcement via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media on October 31, 2019. that they were officially reuniting (minus former drummer For their first concert together, scheduled for December 20, 2019, at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California, Jarrod Alexander, a former MCR touring drummer, will take the place of Bob Bryar on the drums.

Writing

At the age of 16, Gerard Way made his debut as a comic book author by penning the brief-lived “On Raven’s Wings” series, which was canceled after Issue 2 due to the departure of the art team. He was given the pen name Garry Way.^[5]

In 2007, Way began writing the comic-book miniseries The Umbrella Academy. The story was written and illustrated by Way in the initial draft, but Gabriel Ba, a cartoonist, recreated all of Way’s original illustrations for the finished product. The final few pages of “The Apocalypse Suite,” the first book in the series, contain some of Way’s earliest sketches of the characters.

The Apocalypse Suite was first released On May 5, 2007, Dark Horse Comics published an article for Free Comic Book Day.^[6] Since then, a story with the eight-page title “Safe & Sound” has been posted on MySpace.^[7] On September 19, 2007, the very first issue became available.^[8] On October 17, 2007, the second printing of the first issue was made available because it sold out so quickly.^[9] On November 26, 2008, the following episode was made available.^[10]

He is currently working on “The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,” a new comic book series that Way revealed at Comic-Con 2009. He is working on it with fellow artists Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan. My Chemical Romance confirmed the comic’s connection to their music in 2011 and revealed that they are currently working on another unannounced comic book project.

Major Works

‘Gerard Way’s debut studio album as a solo artist is titled, Hesitant Alien. The album topped the charts for both US alternative albums and UK rock albums. On the US Billboard 200, it reached its highest point at position 16.’

He received positive reviews for his comic book “The Umbrella Academy.” The title of the book’s initial six issues was “The Umbrella Academy: Dark Horse Comics released the graphic novels Apocalypse Suite and.’ The Eisner Award was eventually won by it.’

Cartoons

In 2001 Way co-created a cartoon with Joe Boyle called The Breakfast Monkey. They pitched it to Cartoon Network, but the network declined to pick up the concept on the grounds that it was too similar to the existing property Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Awards & Achievements

The Chemical Romance, a group led by Gerard Way, won the category for “Best New Artist-International” in 2005. He was given the “Best Rock Artist- International” honor at the 2006 Los Premios MTV Latinoamerica.’

The group won “Best Rock Video” at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards Japan for their performance of “Welcome to the Black Parade.”‘ Additionally, it received the “People’s Choice: The MuchMusic Video Awards presented the Favorite International Group award.’

At the 2007 NME Awards, they won “Best International Band,” which they retained.’ They received two “NME Awards” in 2011 for their performance of the song “Na Na Na” in the categories of “Best International Band” and “Best Video.”‘

Personal Life

On September 3rd, 2007, Gerard Way wed bassist Lyn-Z, a member of the well-known electropunk band “Mindless Self Indulgence.” He wed her behind the scenes during the Projekt Revolution tour, with a Live Nation employee serving as the minister.

The couple welcomed their daughter, Bandit Lee Way, on May 27, 2009. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California, along with his wife and daughter.
